PENTHOUSE LIVING IN THE HEART OF JOHANNESBURG – MABONENG
When I received a notification that I was one of the finalists at this year’s South African Social Media Award for the category of Best Travel Personality Of The Year, I made accommodation arrangements with a few establishments that I have been eyeing for a while around Johannesburg and surrounding areas. The award ceremony was held on the 27th of November 2021 so it was a good excuse for me to escape Cape Town for a couple of days.
FOX STREET STUDIOS in Maboneng was one of those accommodations that I vowed to check out the next time I found myself in Johannesburg. The Industrial-chick and modern designs of the Fox Street Studios prove that urban living can be sophisticated and comfortable.
Fox Street Studios is a boutique urban hotel located on the vibrant corner of Fox and Kruger Streets in Johannesburg, Maboneng. Previously an old printing works, the building has been transformed into an urban boutique accommodation offering loft/penthouse space rentals, events venue, and exhibition space.
All the suites which are classified as Glass, Copper, and Wood, feature spectacular views of the city skyline and boast a mixture of warm retro vintage finishes and classic clean-cut urban edge design with a focus on raw elements. We had an opportunity to experience both the Glass and Copper penthouses.
GLASS PENTHOUSE SUITE (4th FLOOR)
In my opinion, this is my favourite and probably one of the most stylish, modern, and contemporary urban penthouses out of the three. Every aspect of the penthouse has been designed with meticulous attention to detail.
It’s a two-bedroom penthouse however, I would recommend it for a couple or friends because of the bedroom set-up upstairs.
This suite consists of two bedrooms and one full bathroom with a huge shower and bathtub on the top floor, and a guest toilet on the ground floor next to the TV area.
The main bedroom is an open area set-up with curtains around the bed for some needed privacy. The second bedroom is right opposite the main bed next to the bathroom.
COPPER LOFT APARTMENT SUITE (2nd FLOOR)
If you love the luxurious rustic and industrial look and feel, you are going to love this copper-themed penthouse.
It consists of two ensuite bedrooms on each wing of the building with a copper bathtub in the main bedroom surrounded by retractable sliding glass windows, allowing you to peer out over the cityscape whilst relaxing in Victorian comfort, smart locks, SMEG appliances, and smart lights.
The fully equipped kitchen boasts a 5-meter long kitchen island and a wooden table making it an ideal place for entertaining.

Amenities in both penthouses include:

QUICK FACTS
- Perfect for travellers who want to experience the fun activities, attractions, and the nightlife of vibrant Maboneng without comprising the comfort and luxury living.
- Perfect space for entertaining – you can host exclusive dinner parties, bachelorettes, birthday parties, baby showers, entertain clients, or host any other special moment worthy of high-class memories. I hosted a private lunch to celebrate my award before heading back to Cape Town.
- Photography and film set – The owner says these penthouses have been the location of choice for adverts by aspirational brands such as Jonny Walker, Five Roses, and Netflix, as well as a host of professional models and photographers. Also suitable for TV dramas and music videos.
NB: If you do not like the noise, book the Glass penthouse because it is located higher on the building and the noise from the street and clubs is bearable than in the Copper penthouse.
