GREEN POINT PARK – BIODIVERSITY GARDEN IN THE CITY
Green Point Park is a family-friendly biodiversity park in the heart of Green Point, a stone’s throw away from the famous DHL Stadium. Yep! Cape Town Stadium has been renamed again and is now officially called DHL Stadium as part of a multi-year naming rights deal. To be honest, I was still getting used to calling the stadium Cape Town instead of Green Point and now I have to get used to calling it DHL Stadium. The name change is not a problem for me because it is still one of the best entertainment venues to be built in our country.
The park has numerous children’s playground areas, shaded and unshaded picnic areas, garden benches, outdoor exercise equipment, a sandy volleyball pitch, and plenty of green space to enjoy.
Green Point Park is ideal for a fun day out, healthy walks, parents with children, couples, romantic walks, children’s birthday parties, or an educational space for anyone who enjoys learning about different plants and the history of the Khoisan people. The park was once an open grazing ground for cattle and has now been transformed in recent years to meet the recreational and sporting needs of Cape Town’s growing population.
As we approach the spring season, I thought I should share one of my favourite spots in the city to add to your list of free fun things to do in Cape Town. With beautiful views of Signal Hill, Lion’s Head, and with paragliders jumping from Signal Hill, scenic views of the wetlands, a well-manicured golf course on the side, a café, and a biodiversity garden, the Green Point Park is not your ordinary urban park. I have compiled seven reasons why I think you should visit the Green Point Park.
FIVE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT GREEN POINT PARK
1. PLAY OR WATCH THE CHILDREN PLAY
You can relax and watch your little ones play around multiple playing areas or simply join the fun and play too. Green Point Park has different playground areas for different age groups.
2. ENJOY BEAUTIFUL SCENERY
Fresh water flows from Table Mountain down through to the wetlands area and this helps keep the park green and support the water flora diversity, seagulls, and ducks. To enjoy the beautiful scenery, walk along the perfectly marked paths around the wetlands or sit on the wooden benches scattered around the park.
3. A GREAT PICNIC SPOT
If you are a family, friends, or couple and looking for a great picnic spot, Green Point Park is where you should head to. There are several shaded and unshaded picnic areas with tables and benches and plenty of green open fields. It’s a wonderful location to enjoy company with your loved ones.
4. LEARN ABOUT BIODIVERSITY GARDEN
If you are a nature lover and enjoy learning about different plants, this is a perfect park for you too. The park has its own biodiversity garden with informational boards where you can learn more about the Western Cape fauna and flora.
5. SECURE AND PETS FRIENDLY
There are security guards at almost every corner of the park to ensure that visitors are safe. Dogs on leashes are allowed inside the park and there is also a dedicated park for your furry friends too.
6. EXERCISE AND PLAY VOLLEYBALL
There is a fitness section fitted with outdoor exercise equipment and a volleyball pitch filled with sand. If you don’t want to use the equipment, you are welcome to run inside the park.
7. PARK CAFE
For your convenience, Park Café, an old school easy-going café is situated in the middle of the park. They sell light lunches, a wide range of hot beverages, and sweet and savoury treats. Enjoy your food or drinks from their spacious outdoor terrace with wonderful views of DHL Stadium, Signal Hill, and Lion’s Head.
