29 BEST ACTIVITIES TO DO IN AND AROUND CAPE TOWN

If you have decided that Mother City is your next destination, booked your accommodation and flights, and made a decision that you would Uber/Bolt from Cape Town International Airport to your accommodation when you land but are still not sure what activities you can do and tourist attractions you can explore, then I wrote this blog with you in my mind. You may probably know the popular or budget friendly ones [check them out here]  so I tried my best not to include them in my list. Please note that others may be not so budget-friendly but will be worth the price.

These are some of our favourite things to do in and around the Mother City, and we hope that this list will give you a few ideas of what you can do and see in and around Cape Town to ensure your stay is as fun and memorable as possible.

2. RIDE A WATER BIKE – SIMON’S TOWN

Cape Town Water Bikes is a new way to experience Simon’s Town coast.

3. BEACH HORSEBACK RIDING – NOORDHOEK

Enjoy a 1.30 hour guided horseback beach ride. You will ride straight through the wetlands for about 20 minutes onto beautiful Noordhoek beach. Riding along the water’s edge or the back pan towards Chapman’s Peak and back, a variety of wildlife can often be seen on the beach rides such as birdlife, whales, otters, and seals.

9. TABLE MOUNTAIN ABSEILING

The panoramic views from the top of Table Mountain are breathtaking, but the views from the abseil are even better. Descending down the side of a sheer cliff you will have Camps Bay, the Atlantic Seaboard and the deep blue ocean at your feet with the Twelve Apostles at your side. 15. SUP CAPE TOWN – STAND UP PADDLING AND CANAL KAYAKING (V&A WATERFRONT)

16. SEA KAYAK – V&A WATERFRONT

Cape Town on a kayak will change the way you see our city. On summer mornings especially, there’s a good probability of finding yourself in a pod of endemic Heaviside dolphins, who love the Granger Bay area. In whale season you might see southern right whales, who travel to Cape waters to calve or sunfish, penguins, Cape fur seals, Cape clawless otters, jellyfish, and cormorants diving into the sea when you kayak in Sea Point.

17. KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS – CONSTANTIA

Experience a breathtaking walk in Kirstenbosch Gardens with the Boomslang Aerial Walkway.

Situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Gardens is internationally acclaimed as one of the seven most magnificent botanical gardens in the world. Sandboarding is a great outdoor adventure sport! All it takes to sandboard is a positive attitude, a splash of sunscreen, a few basic instructions and you will be blasting down a sand dune in no time at all.

22. PENGUIN COLONY BOULDER’S BEACH – SIMON’S TOWN

Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town has a lot going for it – the ancient granite boulders protect it from the wind and large waves, making it an ideal swimming spot for adults and children. The beach is always clean and safe because it falls under the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area.

27. HOT-AIR BALLOON OVER THE CAPE WINELANDS

Trains, trams, and automobiles – there are many ways to experience the Cape Winelands, but few that allow you to soar over them like a bird. You’ll get to watch as the crew assembles your heat-powered flying machine, the very first technology that allowed humanity to take to the skies. Lift-off is at sunrise, but the early start is definitely worth it for the views you’ll be treated to as you float over the rolling vineyards and lush meadows that the Winelands are so famous for.

28. ZEITZ MOCCA MUSEUM – V&A WATERFRONT

Visit the world’s largest collection of contemporary African art. Marvel at the architecture, get lost in the art, or just explore the Silo District at the V&A Waterfront around the Zeitz MOCAA Museum.

29. ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM

Visit the Robben Island Museum on a guided tour to explore all the various heritage sites that reflect the Island’s longstanding multi-layered history, such as the graveyard of people who died from leprosy, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe’s house, the Bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South Africa’s freedom fighters were incarcerated for years. The tour culminates with a viewing of Nelson Mandela’s cell.

Tours operate between 09:00am – 15:00pm and expect to pay R400 – R600 per person.
