NETBALL WORLD CUP 2023 – CAPE TOWN

The Western Cape province gets ready to host the world for Netball World Cup!

The 2023 Netball World Cup will be the sixteenth staging of the premier competition in international netball, contested every four years. The tournament will be held from Friday, 28 July with South Africa playing their first match against Wales on that day to Sunday, 6 August 2023 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. This marks a special historical moment because it will also be the first time this tournament will be held on the African continent. Netball World Cup 2023 will also mark the tournament’s 60th anniversary, as the first tournament was held in Eastbourne, England, in 1963.

This is great for the South African economy and its tourism sector as the tournament will take place just a few weeks since the country celebrated a remarkable double triumph at the 2023 Telegraph Travel Awards. The country was recently honoured with the prestigious title of “Best Country” while its iconic and the Netball World Cup 2023 host city, Cape Town, claimed the coveted title of “Best City in the World”. This came as no surprise to many of the locals because with a heady mix of mountains, dramatic mountain passes, endless views of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, beautiful sandy beaches, salty lagoons and bays, amazing rock formations, interesting caves, fossil parks, San rock art, steep cliffs, waterfalls (in the winter season – June to August), Cape Winelands, wildlife and marine wildlife safaris, and picturesque small towns and villages, the Western Cape province will surely leave any visitor breathless and excited to keep coming back.

Like any other sporting event, the Netball World Cup will significantly boost the country’s economy, especially in the Western Cape province through tourism. In addition, it will increase demand for local services through tourism, which will lead to more jobs being created through the construction of large viewing venues and fan zones for watching matches.

As a woman who lives in South Africa, I think women’s sport is crucial for empowering women and young girls, and in creating safe spaces for women to connect with each other. I hope that the Netball World Cup this year inspires a lot more young girls to play sports at their schools and in local communities and to utilise sports as a motivator to help them better themselves in the future.
