NEW FORD ECOSPORT BLACK – BE ALIVE! BE YOU
I was not aware of how popular the Ford EcoSport range is until I started driving one. Here is a fun challenge – Count how many Ford EcoSport models you are going to see after reading this article and you will understand exactly what I am talking about. It does not matter if the model is an Ambiente, EcoBoost Trend, or EcoBoost Titanium. Ford SA hopes to continue dominating the market even further with the introduction of the new EcoSport Black model.
Having spent a week so far with the new Ford EcoSport Black I realised that this vehicle is more of a daily and city driving vehicle with some long distance road trips that do not require lots of off-roading or tough terrains. It’s fun to drive, easy to park and it’s not too big or too small – It’s just perfect. So, it hits that sweet spot in the middle segment. I drove it around the city, over Chapman’s Peak, and visited four different small towns on the West Coast including a wine estate and it was a breeze to drive this beauty.
The boot space is fairly big enough for the vehicle size and I fitted one big travel bag, 3 backpacks, and a picnic basket comfortably.
You also get 60/40 split rear seat to increase your boot space if you travel without passengers on the back seat.
So what’s new on the NEW Ford EcoSport Black and is it worth looking at if you are in the market for some new wheels or an upgrade?
THE EXTERIOR
The new Ford EcoSport Black is based on the EcoSport Ambiente 1.5 auto model but this beauty comes packed with some exciting cosmetic upgrades in black, hence the name.
The all-black styling package, the black front grille and skid plate, black hood and side decals, black roof rails, black 16-inch alloys (replaced the basic 15-inch steel rims on standard EcoSport models), black painted functional roof, black spare wheel cover, and black mirror caps give the new Ford EcoSport Black a slightly darker personality.
The EcoSport Black makes you feel alive, happy, and cool. You will definitely make a statement without saying anything at all with this beauty.
THE INTERIOR
Standard features include cloth seats, quality hard plastic dashboard and door panels, multifunctional power-assisted steering wheel, electric powered-windows in front and rear, factory fitted radio with a 4.2-inch non-touch screen and SYNC with Bluetooth and Voice Control, two front USB charging points, and six speakers.
The EcoSport Black also comes standard with manual air-conditioning and climate controls.
THE FORD ECOSPORT BLACK COMES IN FIVE COLOURS
- Smoke
- Canyon Ridge
- Blue Lightning
- Diamond White
- Moondust Silver
THE ENGINE
The new EcoSport Black comes with a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine producing 91kW and 151Nm of torque paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. I averaged 8.4 litres per 100km with an average speed of 120km on open roads when I went to the West Coast and 60km around the city which I feel was a little steep considering the size of the engine.
SAFETY FEATURES
The new Ford EcoSport Black is fitted with six airbags (dual front, side, and curtain airbags), rear parking sensors only (no front parking sensors or rear view camera), dual ISOFIX child-seat mounting points in the rear seats, ABS brakes, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with traction control.
Other standard safety features include manually-operated central locking and alarm.
VERDICT
The new Ford EcoSport Black looks stylish and fresh, drives like a dream, and there is no doubt that it will also add to the ever-growing popularity of the already popular EcoSport models however, I wish there were a few things that Ford SA could have added to complete the style and sportiness of this model – Things like an infotainment with a touch screen, onboard navigation system, cruise control, front parking sensors, LED day running lights, and a rear view camera – but I guess those extras would have increased the retail price too.
I really enjoyed driving the EcoSport Black and if you are an active individual and/or young family looking for a practical and compact SUV, I highly recommend booking a test drive to see if the EcoSport Black would be the right fit for you and/or your family.
