WATERBLOMMETJIE FESTIVAL 2022
It is time for the annual Waterblommetjie Festival. Celebrate this unique local delicacy on Saturday 3 September at three local wine farms in Paarl, Domaine Brahms Wineries, Windmeul Kelder, and one of my favourite children-friendly wine farms in the Cape Winelands, Rhebokskloof Wine Estate. Rhebokskloof is too special to keep to myself hence I’ve decided to share this amazing and unique upcoming annual event with you so that you can visit the estate with your entire family, friends, or partner and see why I consider it one of my favourites.
This event takes place only once a year when the indigenous waterblommetjies are in season. Waterblommetjies Festival is a family-friendly day filled with fun programmes including live music to entertain visitors while they enjoy different mouth-watering waterblommetjie dishes, pizzas, and ice cream made in traditional and innovative ways.
With its well-manicured lawns next to a tranquil dam, Rhebokskloof offers plenty of space for the whole family. Although the restaurant will be closed, there is a dedicated bar and food area where visitors can try the traditional waterblommetjie dishes, pizzas, and delicious waterblommetjie infused ice cream.
WHAT IS A WATERBLOMMETJIE PLANT?
Waterblommetjie /ˈvɑːterˌblomeki/ or Cape Pond Weed, Water Hawthorne, Vleikos, Aponogeton distachyos (Aponogetonaceae) meaning “little water flower” is one of South Africa’s most famous edible plants. This plant has a long history of use by the indigenous Khoikhoi people, both medicinally and as a nutritious food.
Waterblommetjies are found in dams and marshes of the Western Cape. Its buds are usually ready to be picked in the southern midwinter months of July and August, leading to their use in winter stews such as waterblommetjiebredie (little water flower stew).
